From the Pond, continue along the path past some Rosa moyesii with red-pink flowers in June and sealing-wax red hips later. Cross the open grass to rhododendron "Polar Bear" which has large trusses of scented flowers in August. Further on is a bed of flame coloured azaleas with the white varieties "Silver Slipper" and "Persil" adding a cooler touch. Beside this bed and flowering about the same time is Rhododendron decorum, a highly fragrant white with a touch of pink.
Also in the vicinity is a handkerchief tree (Davidia involucrata) with large white "handkerchiefs" in spring and red autumn leaves. In May, the scarlet flowers of a Chilean fire tree (Embothrium coccineum) overhang azalea "Irene Koster", a pale pink with the sweetest scent. There are more gems in this far corner. An old stand of Eucryphia glutinosa flowering August and September is in front of a stand of Enkianthus campanulatus which has many small erica-like flowers in spring and glorious autumn colours.

Embothrium coccineum, the Chilean fire tree always impresses at first sight. The older specimens here will be 10m/30ft tall.
If you would like to continue your virtual stroll round the garden, walk this way to the glen.
